A wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) is not just a bigger car — it is purpose-built with a ramp or lift and floor anchor points. Booking one well means giving the operator the right information up front.
Ramp vs lift
- Ramp WAVs — a fold-out ramp at the rear; the wheelchair user boards under their own power or with an assistant pushing. Suits most manual and many powered chairs.
- Lift WAVs — a powered tail-lift; better for heavier powered wheelchairs and users who cannot manage a ramp incline.

How many people travel alongside
It depends on the wheelchair's size and the vehicle layout. As a general guide, a WAV carrying one wheelchair user can also take two to three seated passengers. Larger powered chairs take up more floor space and reduce seat count. If you are a family of four plus a wheelchair user, say so at booking so we send a vehicle with enough seats.
Give notice where you can
WAVs are a smaller part of any fleet. For a specific date and time — an airport transfer, a hospital appointment, a wedding — book as far ahead as possible. Same-day is sometimes possible but never guaranteed.
What to tell the operator
- Wheelchair type: manual or powered, and whether it folds.
- Approximate dimensions and weight if powered.
- Whether the user will transfer to a seat or travel in the chair.
- Number of additional passengers and any luggage.
- Whether you need ramp or lift.
- Any assistance required at pickup or drop-off.
Your rights
In the UK, licensed taxi and private hire drivers must not refuse a booking or charge extra because a passenger uses a wheelchair, and must provide reasonable mobility assistance, unless the driver holds a specific medical exemption. If you are ever treated otherwise, that is a licensing matter you can raise with the local authority.
