Heathrow Airport Transfers: Terminals, Pickup Points and 2026 Drop-Off Charges
A practical guide to Heathrow airport transfers: which terminal you need, where pre-booked cars pick up, the £7 drop-off charge and how to make arrivals painless.
Heathrow is the busiest airport in the UK, and a badly planned transfer there can cost you an hour and a lot of stress. This guide covers what actually matters when you book a car to or from Heathrow.
Which terminal do you need?
Heathrow has four passenger terminals, and they are not close together:
- Terminal 2 (Queen's Terminal) — Star Alliance carriers, most of Lufthansa, United, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines.
- Terminal 3 — many oneworld and SkyTeam long-haul flights, Virgin Atlantic, Delta, Emirates, American.
- Terminal 4 — SkyTeam, Qatar Airways, Malaysia Airlines and several others.
- Terminal 5 — British Airways and Iberia almost exclusively.
Always check your terminal on your booking confirmation the day before you travel — airlines move between terminals more often than people expect. When you book with us, give the flight number and we confirm the terminal for you.
Where do pre-booked cars pick up at Heathrow?
For arrivals, a pre-booked private hire car meets you at the terminal car park or a dedicated pickup area, not at the kerb outside arrivals — the kerbside is reserved for buses, black cabs and very short stops. With a meet-and-greet service your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, then walks you to the car.
For departures, the driver drops you at the terminal forecourt.
The Heathrow drop-off charge
Heathrow charges £7 to drop off at any terminal forecourt (2026 rate). There is no free option at the forecourt. To avoid it you can be dropped at a car park and take the free internal transfer, but for most travellers with luggage the £7 is worth paying and we include it transparently in your quote rather than surprising you later.
There is no charge to pick up from the car parks, which is where arrivals collections happen anyway.
How early should the car arrive?
- Domestic / short-haul departure: aim to be at the terminal about 2 hours before departure.
- Long-haul departure: 3 hours before.
- Work back from that, add local traffic time, and that is your pickup time. We build in a buffer and track your outbound flight is not relevant here — for departures the risk is the road, so we err early.
Arrivals: what if the flight is delayed?
We track the inbound flight. If it lands early or late, the driver adjusts. Standard included waiting time after landing is generous enough to cover immigration and baggage reclaim; anything beyond that is charged by the minute, not in large blocks.
Luggage and vehicle choice
A standard saloon comfortably takes two large cases plus two cabin bags and up to four passengers. Travelling as a full group of four with four big suitcases? Book the next size up — an estate or MPV — so nothing ends up on a lap. For five or more passengers, choose an MPV or an 8-seater.
