Cruise Transfers to Southampton, Dover and Portsmouth: A Practical Guide
Getting to and from UK cruise terminals by car: which terminal your ship uses, luggage handling, timing around embarkation windows and combining with an airport.
Cruise transfers have their own quirks — multiple terminals per port, strict boarding windows and a lot of luggage. Here is how to plan a smooth door-to-ship journey.
Know your terminal, not just your port
Big UK cruise ports have several terminals, and your ship is assigned to a specific one:
- Southampton — Mayflower, Ocean, Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) and City cruise terminals.
- Dover — Cruise Terminal 1 and Cruise Terminal 2 at the Western Docks.
- Portsmouth — Portsmouth International Port.
Your cruise line's e-tickets state the terminal and your embarkation window (a specific arrival time slot, often staggered by cabin). Give us the terminal and the slot and the driver targets that arrival time — not too early (you may be turned away), not late.
Luggage
Cruises mean big cases, sometimes one or two per person for a longer voyage. Apply the step-up rule: a couple with four large cases is an estate or MPV job; a family is an MPV or 8-seater. Terminals have porters who take your checked bags at the door, so you only carry hand luggage onto the ship.
Combining an airport and a cruise
Flying into Heathrow or Gatwick and cruising from Southampton the same day is common. One long-distance booking covers airport pickup (with flight tracking) straight through to the cruise terminal — no need to arrange two separate cars. On the way back, the reverse: terminal to airport with time built in for disembarkation, which can be slow.
Timing tips
- Build in extra time on turnaround Saturdays at Southampton — the port and the M27 are busy.
- Disembarkation is by group and can run late; for a return flight, give yourself a generous gap.
- For early embarkation slots, expect an early pickup, especially from London or the Midlands.
