Child Car Seats in Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles: UK Law Explained
Do taxis need child car seats in the UK? The legal position for licensed taxis and minicabs, when a child can use an adult belt, and how to travel safely with kids.
Parents ask this constantly, and the rules are genuinely different for taxis than for private cars. Here is the current UK position.
The legal exemption
In the UK, children can travel in a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle without a child car seat if one is not available. This exemption exists so families are never simply refused a ride.
However:
- A child under 3 without a car seat must travel on a rear seat.
- A child aged 3 or over without a car seat must use an adult seat belt and travel on a rear seat.
- A child must never use a rear-facing car seat in a front seat with an active airbag.
What "safest" actually looks like
The exemption is a legal minimum, not a recommendation. An unrestrained or adult-belted small child is far less protected than one in an appropriate seat. If you can, the safer options are:
- Bring your own car seat. Most fit quickly and you know it is correct for your child's weight and height. For airport trips you often need the seat at your destination anyway.
- Request a seat from the operator in advance. Where we can provide a suitable child or booster seat we will — tell us the child's age, weight and height when you book so we fit the right one. This needs notice; it is not a same-day guarantee.
- Use a travel booster for older children — light, packable, and better than an adult belt alone.
Booking with children
When you book, include in the notes:
- Number of children and each child's age and approximate weight.
- Whether you are bringing your own seats or need us to provide them.
- Whether you need an isofix base (bring your own — bases are car-specific).
